Our group investigates the response of composite structures that are made of more than one material.
Geometric and material incompatibilities are ubiquitous in natural structures and are recently being exploited in synthetic structures to enhance the performance of soft systems. The use of composite structures with such incompatibilities can be used to enhance the performance of soft systems and lead to counter-intuitive behaviors. In our group, we show that radial incompatibilities in bi-layer tubes give rise to spontaneous bifurcations (Read more). We also show that twist incompatibilities in bi-layer tubes can lead to the twist motion in bi-layer tubes (Read more).
